Spotlight: Evergreen

The kind-hearted Prince of Nature

Evergreen is one of the main characters in the senior thesis film "Game Boys". Here is how he came to be.

Concept Art and first Designs

From the beginning Evergreen was always a strong, kind-hearted, gentle giant. We wanted the themes of the film- friendship, forgiveness, and acceptance- to ring true in him. He needed to appear strong but not intimidating; confident, yet humble.

We thought to ourselves: What would Mother Nature's son look like?

Sculpting and Modeling

After his design was (mostly) finalized, he went in to sculpting and modeling. Along the way some aspects of his design were tweaked to better fit the 3d medium.

Textures and Final Renders

After retopology was completed he was ready for texturing. For both Blackheart and Evergreen we wanted to mimic the rough textured style of 3d games from the 2010's. A big point of inspiration being Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess.

After almost a year of hard work, Evergreen was finally ready for the big screen!

Spotlight: Blackheart

The fearful villain

Blackheart is the main antagonist in the senior thesis film "Game Boys". Here is how he came to be.

Concept Art and first Designs

Blackheart went through many iterations in the early design stages. We explored many different possibilites for what "Nature's opposite" could look like. He needed to be scary, but also vulnerable. His skinny frame with blackened skin doubled not only as an unsettling physical appearance, but also a hint of his backstory.

An important question about Blackheart's character was, how did he become this way?

The addition of Ava Schneiderman to our project made a world of a difference in resdesigning Blackheart. We owe a lot to her.

Sculpting and Modeling

After his design was finalized, he was brought in for sculpting and modeling. Along the way some of his proportions were exaggerated to emphasis his boney appearance and to contrast with Evergreen's sturdy build.

Textures and Final Renders

After retopology was completed he was ready for texturing. For both Blackheart and Evergreen we wanted to mimic the rough textured style of 3d games from the 2010's. A big point of inspiration being Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess.

After months of hard work, Blackheart was finally ready for the big screen!
